Interview by --Wizdom
Give Heads
some background as to who you are and where you’re coming from?
I am the fat kid that suddenly got skinny and suddenly said
gimmie to the girls that a few years ago weren't having any. Thats me. I
am from Reading PA, a broke down industrial city in between Harrisburg
and Philadelphia PA. I have been in the Twin Cities for about 8 years :
Saint Paul, Northeast Minneap, Columbia Heights, back to Saint Paul. I
came here to play Basketball for Macalester College, and as you can see
that worked out real well.
I had been in a group called SUSPECTS back in PA and convinced my man
Jayechs to move up here to further the cause. After 2 albums, a failed
indy label, some dope parties and a bunch of bullshit, I am solo. I
guess I come from that perseverance perspective. The, "if at first
you don't succeed" shit! Let me share this real quick. In PA I was
threatened with death for rhyming. Whites kids didn't rhyme. In Minneap,
to this day some cats give me the, "you aren't from here"
shit. I've been dealing with some form of "get out" my whole
life, so I am somewhat stand-off-ish. Some mistake that for cockiness.
but that Ain't me. I LOVE hip hop and I LOVE and LIVE in MN. This is my
life. Music is my breath, release, sweat and passion. Anyone else who
feels like that, know where I am coming from.
Have you worked
with any mainstream artist?
I have worked with Fergi from BEP. She is singing on my possible
single "elevator music". Will.I.AM has produced a track for
me. My mellow, Printz Board is my main producer. He does shit with BEP,
Dr, Dre, Busta Rhymes and NIkka Costa to name a few. Jeremy Ruzumna
(he wrote all Macy Gray's hot shit) did a cut for me. I'm looking
forward to working with more cats, mainstream, underground, whatever,
as long as the music is fresh and from the heart.
What`s the next
move for Golden?
I should have a 12" coming out sometime in November. The street
date is still up in the air, but I promise it will be live! I was able
to get Distribution through TRC for the record, so i want to make sure
everything is in place before it drops. I have a track on the
"GET SHORTY 2" soundtrack. The movie will be out in Feb, so
that should be hot. Hopefully it will make the final edit of the movie
as well. Go peep the flick when it comes out to see!
What do you want
people to hear when they hear your music?
I want them to hear my world view,
confusing and contradictory, beautiful, ugly, introspective and life
of the party. Depends what track. My mom hears all the wrong
harmonies.
I want people to have fun to some tracks, to not be so serious all the
time. On other tracks I want to peek people's social conscious to ask
questions about the state of their and our collective lives. Some
tracks I just wanna bug out or tell a story. Most of all I want people
to hear my words. I want people to get past the beat, get past the
underground/mainstream music factor and listen to the words. No the
word play or the tone, but what the actual words mean.
What projects
are coming up for you?
The Mixcd just dropped. They are giving free copies with purchases at
the 5th Element and Mindstate. The 12" is coming soon. The Get
Shorty 2 soundtrack. I have some exclusives on the Street Burners
Mixtape from Dj Midas. A record called "Keep it Jumping" is
on an animated indy film about a cartoon pimp. Go figure. The name has
changed like 3 times so i don't even know what the new one is. But how
many cartoon pimp movies by Eric Eisner can there be?
I just got done producing the new Twisted Linguistics Album,
"What I've seen, what I've done". Noah B., Ike, and Myself
put a lot of work in on it, so please check out it when it drops. I am
starting work on my guy, Cas' EP, which should be real dope. Other
than that I am recording and writing and practicing the art of
patience.
When did you know
you wanted to be a rapper?
I rapped since I first heard Kool Mo Dee, but I new I wanted to BE a
rapper the first time I heard Illmatic. That Album changed the way I
thought about music and life and a whole bunch of other shit.
A lot of people
say HipHop is dead, how do you feel?
It looks alive to me. You just got to search a little bit for what
your looking for. Its out there. It's just changing. You got Little
Brother, Brother Ali, K-os. K-os, this cat is crazy! So hiphop its
hurts, but he is pushing it somewhere else as well. It's not dead, its
just not what it was. People are always stuck on the past, trying to
catch and relive what they once did. Life ain't like that. Move on.
Turn off your radio and seek out what you are looking for. (I'll give
you a hint. Its at the 5th and Mindstate and It's called "The
Local")
Where can people
get your music or check you out?
Check out http://www.golden-mc.com
or www.beetsandproduce.com Also
check the 5th and Mindstate for copies of "The Local Mixtape".
My 12" and upcoming commercial releases should be available
everywhere they sell fine music plus the usual online sites. Check the
website for updates.
