"my life, my goals and my family. " |
|

When asked about his name "Selfish" say's "I'm selfish about my life, my goals and my family. If you don't take care of yourself, you don't have anything to give anyone else - so yeah, I'm selfish about taking care of me."
Selfish was born 1979 in Chicago, IL to a teenage mother. Selfish was moved from school to school getting into trouble along the way. AT Age seven his mother moved them to Atlanta GA. Selfish Begin to enroll in Drama programs. This helped Selfish very little as a thirst for excitement kept him on edge.
Selfish moved to South Carolina with his mom where he continued to run the streets trying to find a place of belonging. Finally His mom decided to move again and landed in St. Paul, Minnesota.
In an attempt to reconcile with his absent biological father to no avail, he got himself into trouble with the law. A forgiving judge and with strong family support, Selfish was given a second chance and decided to focus on his dream - writing and performing rap music.

HHC: What part of the twin cities you from?
SELFISH: I was born in Chicago, raised in Atlanta but I rep St. Paul..
HHC: What is your opinon on Minnesota Underground?
SELFISH:The undergroud scen in MN consist of a lot of talent and even more hating. This to me is primarly the reason no street artist have made it out of here.
HHC: What do you think of your album, “Life Story”?
SELFISH: I look at "Life Story" as a learning process, a stepping stone, and a hot album at the time it was released. At this point in the game though "Life Story" is lukewarm compared to the shit we cookin up.
HHC: What is your favorite song off your album?
SELFISH: " Life Story" of course because it gives you a brief look in my histry that's unfabricated and unparellel to other songs.
HHC: Describe your style?
SELFISH:I don't feel you can put me into a box and label my style. I'm versitile, but I guess you could say my syle is vividly bone chilling!
HHC: What sets your music apart from other artist out there?
SELFISH: The credibility of my words, the vividness of my stories and the hunger in my delivery.
HHC: Do you perform live and where?
SELFISH: I've performed all over the state from the Red Sea to Twizzle Zizzle w/Grand Master Flash, to Yo! the Movement Hip Hop Fest in 03' and 04', in all about 40 to 50 shows in 2 1/2 years.
HHC: What inspires you as an emcee when writing your rhymes?
SELFISH: Beaing broke and seeing others that are even brokier that me, if that's possible.
HHC: Did you start freestyling? Is that how you got into rap? Battle rapping?
SELFISH: No, not at all!!!! Battle rapping and freestyling ain't never really been me. Where I'm from we take words real serious so I've always focused on songs and making albums which allows you to review what your saying before you say it and make sure it's the truth, rather that make somebody laugh and not really mean what I say. But I got in rap in the 80's listening to RUN-DMC.
HHC: Do you only rap or do you produce as well?
SELFISH: I'll stick to rappin and for the most part most producers should stick to producing. You feel me?
HHC:Who have you worked with locally/nationally and who would you like to work with?
SELFISH: I've worked with F.I.C. from the Pharohs, Amy Carter, Humble Child... I would like to work with Tracy Chapman, Juelz Santana, Jadakiss, Puff, Fabalous, Slim Thug, Twista, Timbaland, ETc....
HHC: You are signed to a label tell us about your label?
SELFISH: I don't really have much to say about that....but I will say my best interest are at heart.
HHC: What are the future plans for selfish and where can people learn more about you?
SELFISH: The plan is to release my sophmore album this summer by any means nessesary and set the streets of St.Paul/ Minneapolis on fire as well as any other city we visit.
HHC: If you never had talent the talent of rapping, what else could see your self doing?
SELFISH: Working with "at-risk" inner city youth.
HHC: Would you like to go mainstream or stay underground?
SELFISH: To be honest, I don't really care. As long as my people can eat off me and I can keep doing me, I could care less about going mainstream.
HHC: What do you think it takes to be successful in rap?
SELFISH: Raw uncut talent, humbleness, a team with your best interest at heart, and people who feel you are worth listening to.
HHC: What are some of the grimy games people in the rap game play?
SELFISH: promoting bogus shows, trying to get you locked into contracts.
HHC: Is there any advice you could give to someone about the rap game in MN?
SELFISH: be open to constructive critisim but don't change who you are.. Network as much as possible and don't expect things to happen to quickly.
HHC: Any thing else you want to say?
SELFISH: Yea, I'd like to say thanks for taking interest in me, and be looking out for the new album!
